A EUROPEAN OIL ON CANVAS BATTLE SCENE, ATTRIBUTED TO JAN PEETER VERDUSSEN (FLEMISH, 1700–1763) - A dynamic and finely composed battle scene, depicting a cavalry engagement amid a smoky, chaotic battlefield. At the center, mounted officers lead their troops in fierce combat, while fallen soldiers and rearing horses animate the foreground. The background reveals distant formations and banners stretching toward the horizon, beneath a luminous sky that contrasts the turmoil below. The painting demonstrates masterful handling of motion and atmosphere, with fluid brushwork and dramatic chiaroscuro recalling the Flemish Baroque military painters of the early 18th century, notably Jan Peeter Verdussen (Antwerp, 1700–1763), to whom this work has been traditionally attributed. Verdussen, celebrated for his detailed depictions of the War of the Spanish Succession and Italian campaigns, infused his works with a distinctive combination of topographical accuracy and theatrical energy. An old handwritten label affixed to the stretcher identifies the artist as J. Peter Verdussen, noting his activity in Turin and service to the King of Sardinia. The canvas has been relined, and minor restorations are visible throughout under UV examination. Stable surface with light craquelure consistent with age.
