Bidspirit auction | AN OIL ON CANVAS BATTLE
AN OIL ON CANVAS BATTLE SCENE, ATTRIBUTED TO JAN VAN DER STOFFE (DUTCH, 1611–1682) - A vigorous and atmospheric depiction of a cavalry battle set before a mountainous landscape, the composition features mounted soldiers in fierce combat, fallen figures in the foreground, and distant troops under a turbulent sky. The artist captures the motion of horses and soldiers with energetic brushwork and a rich palette of ochres, reds, and earthy tones, characteristic of the Leiden school and contemporaries of Jan van der Stogt (van der Stoffe). The work exhibits the painter’s typical balance of narrative drama and painterly atmosphere. Oil on canvas, presented in a 19th-century giltwood frame. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
