Bidspirit auction | A CIRCLE OF ADAM DE
A CIRCLE OF ADAM DE COSTER (1586–1643) TWO FIGURES BY CANDLELIGHT OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING - An evocative nocturnal scene depicting two figures illuminated by the flickering light of a candle, masterfully rendered in the Caravaggesque manner typical of the Flemish nocturne tradition. The composition displays a striking command of light and shadow: the young boy’s face and the man’s hands are dramatically highlighted, creating a compelling sense of intimacy and psychological tension. This finely executed painting can be attributed to the circle of Adam de Coster, known as ”the painter of candlelight, ” whose works are celebrated for their sophisticated treatment of artificial light and half-length figures emerging from the darkness. The chiaroscuro effects and warm tonal palette closely follow the aesthetic of de Coster’s mature period. Footnote: Adam de Coster, active in Antwerp, was among the foremost exponents of Northern European tenebrism inspired by Caravaggio. His oeuvre is characterized by intimate, candlelit interiors, refined psychological depth, and dramatic use of light—qualities reflected in the present work. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
