The central image is flanked by 15 scenes from the Passion of Christ and the Annunciation. Before 2002, the rosary was composed of 15 ”mysteries, ” or events in the lives of Jesus and Mary. Each set of five mysteries is typically associated with a specific color of rose in paintings. The panels in a Madonna del Rosario would depict these events: Joyful Mysteries: Events related to Christ's early life. White roses might surround these; Sorrowful Mysteries: Events related to Christ's Passion and death. Red roses might surround these; Glorious Mysteries: Events related to Christ's Resurrection and the Coronation of Mary. Yellow roses might surround these. Northern school, 16th century.
