AN OIL ON BOARD PAINTING JOHN THE BAPTIST BEHEADING, FLEMISH SCHOOL, CIRCA 1480-1490S - Standing on a veranda in front of a gray brick wall, an executioner in green and white robes proudly holds in his left hand the head of John the Baptist, surrounded by a golden halo and dripping with blood. With his right hand, the executioner waves his sword in a triumphant gesture. At the right edge of the painting are two elegantly dressed figures, looking down sadly, their hands folded reverently. In the center, behind a low wall, is a landscape with mountains, trees, and a complex of buildings under a cloudless sky. This is a rather rare depiction of the beheading of John, which usually depicts Salome. Flemish school, late 15th century. Housed in a luxurious frame from the same period.
