Bidspirit auction | AN OIL ON CANVAS BATTLE

AN OIL ON CANVAS BATTLE SCENE, POSSIBLY DUTCH OR FLEMISH SCHOOL, 17TH–18TH CENTURY - Depicting a cavalry battle before the walls of a fortified town, this atmospheric composition captures the energy and tumult of combat amid swirling clouds of smoke. Soldiers on horseback engage in close formation, their movement partially obscured by the haze of gunfire. The restrained color palette and soft, diffused light emphasize the drama of the scene rather than individual figures, an approach characteristic of late Baroque Dutch and Flemish battle painters such as Philips Wouwerman, Pieter Meulener, or Jan van Huchtenburg.
