A FRENCH OIL ON CANVAS PORTRAIT OF A SLEEPING CHILD, CA. 1690–1720 - A tender and finely rendered Baroque portrait depicting a sleeping child resting peacefully upon a blue cushion. The artist masterfully captures the softness of the child’s features through delicate sfumato transitions and warm, diffused lighting. The composition, with its intimate focus and serene mood, recalls the devotional imagery of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, often associated with the French schools influenced by painters such as Pierre Mignard, Hyacinthe Rigaud, and Nicolas de Largillière. The subtle interplay of flesh tones and shadow creates a lifelike presence, while the closed eyes and gentle smile evoke both innocence and repose.
