SUZANNE DE COURT (FRENCH, ACTIVE CIRCA 1600–1630), THE LAMENTATION OVER THE DEAD CHRIST - An exquisite Limoges enamel on copper panel depicting The Lamentation over the Dead Christ, the Virgin Mary cradling the lifeless body of Christ at the foot of the Cross. Behind them appear Saint John, Mary Magdalene, and two holy men, their faces rendered with intense emotional subtlety. The composition is illuminated by delicate modeling in white and gold against a deep blue-green ground, with fine grisaille and translucent enamel highlights characteristic of the late Limoges manner. Signed S. C. in gold at lower centre, this work can be confidently attributed to Suzanne de Court, one of the very few documented female enamel painters of the French Renaissance. Active in Limoges at the turn of the 17th century, she was celebrated for her refinement of tone, sensitive devotional subjects, and elegant figural style that combined the Italianate grace of the School of Fontainebleau with the spiritual delicacy of Northern Mannerism. Footnotes: Suzanne de Court is recorded as the daughter of Jean de Court, one of the principal enamel painters to the French court. She is among the few named female masters of the Limoges workshops, and her signed works—most often devotional subjects—are preserved in major museum collections, including: The Musée du Louvre, Paris (The Annunciation, inv. OA 1429). The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (The Deposition from the Cross). The Victoria and Albert Museum, London (The Lamentation, signed S. C.). The present panel, with its expressive pathos and masterful handling of enamel and gold detailing, stands as a remarkable example of Suzanne de Court’s art at its height.
