AN OIL ON BOARD BY H. GILL (BRITISH SCHOOL, 19TH CENTURY), STORMY SEAS AT THE PIER - Oil on panel, signed lower right ”H. Gill.” A dramatic marine scene depicting a turbulent coastal view with high surf battering a pier crowded with figures as ships struggle against the waves. The principal vessel, a two-masted sailing ship with ochre sails, fights the storm near the jetty while smaller boats navigate the foaming waters. The composition captures the energy and peril of seafaring life with expressive brushwork and a vigorous palette of ochres, blues, and greys under a turbulent sky. The artist’s fluent technique and atmospheric treatment of light recall the late-Romantic British marine tradition of William Joy, Clarkson Stanfield, and Edward William Cooke, emphasizing the heroic struggle of men and ships against the sea. Frame: Later giltwood frame. Label (verso): ”Wilfrid Hurworth, Carver, Gilder & Picture Frame Maker, ” an English framer active in the late 19th to early 20th century, supporting a British origin for the painting.
