A PAUL KUJAL (ACTIVE EARLY 20TH CENTURY), STREET SCENE IN CAIRO, 1938 - A vivid Orientalist genre scene depicting three Arab men gathered in a narrow street of Cairo’s old quarter. One smokes a long pipe while another tends a small brazier, the third standing beside them holding a flask. The composition is enriched by the elaborate mashrabiya balconies, stuccoed façades, and the distant view of a mosque minaret that anchor the work firmly in North African architecture of the early 20th century. Executed with a warm, sunlit palette of ochres, carmines, and turquoise tones, the painting reflects the fascination of European artists with the everyday life and exotic atmosphere of the Middle East during the interwar period.
