Bidspirit auction | AN OIL ON CANVAS BATTLE

AN OIL ON CANVAS BATTLE SCENE OF THE TURKISH WARS, POSSIBLY ITALIAN OR CENTRAL EUROPEAN SCHOOL, 17TH–18TH CENTURY - A powerful depiction of a large-scale cavalry engagement during the Ottoman campaigns, this dramatic composition captures the height of battle under a smoke-filled sky. In the foreground, armored riders in plumed helmets and Ottoman soldiers in turbans clash with sabers and lances, while the background reveals a besieged city engulfed in flames. The artist’s vigorous brushwork, chiaroscuro modeling, and energetic composition evoke the grand tradition of Central European Baroque battle painters such as Johann Georg Platzer, Franz Christoph Janneck, or Francesco Monti (il Brescianino).
