A PAIR OF STILL LIFES BY OSCAR SOGARO (ITALIAN, 1888–1967): WATERMELONS AND MELONS, 1933 - A charming and refined pair of still lifes by Oscar Sogaro, a painter associated with the Italian Novecento realist movement. Depicting sliced watermelons and melons set upon a tabletop beside glass vessels, the compositions reveal Sogaro’s disciplined geometry, serene tonality, and sensitive treatment of natural light. The crisp modeling of forms and balanced chromatic structure reflect the return to order aesthetic prevalent in Italian painting of the 1930s, while maintaining a quiet lyricism reminiscent of Giorgio Morandi’s contemporaneous work. Executed in 1933, these canvases exemplify Sogaro’s skill in combining classical harmony with modern simplicity, transforming ordinary domestic objects into meditative studies of color, volume, and light.
