M. ROYDEN (EARLY 20TH CENTURY), STILL LIFE WITH BUTTERFLY - A richly detailed floral still life depicting a lavish bouquet of tulips, roses, daisies, and narcissi arranged in a terracotta vase with a relief figure of a faun, set beside a finely rendered glass ewer and a tabletop scattered with grapes, peaches, and fallen blossoms. A butterfly and a bee animate the quiet composition, introducing delicate natural movement and symbolic references to transience and renewal. The dark ground and luminous modeling reflect the enduring influence of Dutch 17th-century still-life painting, reinterpreted here through early-20th-century color sensibility and precision of detail.
