ANTOINE-LOUIS BARYE (FRENCH, 1796–1875), A BRONZE RELIEF PLAQUE OF A WALKING PANTHER - A finely cast bronze relief depicting a panther striding to the left, its body modeled with taut musculature and expressive naturalism characteristic of Antoine-Louis Barye, the preeminent French sculptor of the Romantic animalier school. The feline’s sinuous pose, poised in mid-movement, captures both the grace and latent power of the species, a theme that fascinated Barye throughout his career. The relief is mounted within a simple yet elegant dark-stained wooden frame with molded edges, typical of the period, and bears its original hanging wire on the reverse. Signed BARYE in relief along the lower edge. Footnote: Antoine-Louis Barye was among the foremost sculptors of 19th-century France and a leading figure of the animalier movement, celebrated for his vivid portrayals of lions, tigers, panthers, and other wild beasts. His reliefs, often produced in small decorative formats, were widely collected and cast both during and after his lifetime. The bronze surface displays a deep patina with minor rubbing on the high points and small traces of green oxidation; the wooden frame shows light wear, minor splits, and surface scratches. No structural issues observed.
