A HERMANN NONNENMACHER (1892-1988) SIGNED BRONZE 'FAUN AND WOMAN', 20TH CEN. - A sculpture by the German-born artist Hermann Nonnenmacher (1892-1988) depicting a faun and a woman in a tender embrace, the faun kissing the cheek of the woman. The piece is signed by the artist on the base. Nonnenmacher was born in the city of Coburg in 1892. As a young man, he went off to war, fighting for the German army in WW1 and sustaining some hearing loss due to the fighting. After the war, he traded his weapons for the tools of an artist, studying at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts and joining the Association of German Artists. He would marry fellow artist Erna Rosenberg soon after the war, the two producing many sculptures together which would be displayed on public buildings throughout Germany. Upon the rise of the Nazis, their work would be branded 'Degenerate Art' and be destroyed, the two of them fleeing just before the outbreak of WW2 and being interned in the UK, where they would live the rest of their days, continuing to create art and teach others as well.
