GEORGES BAREAU, MALE NUDE BRONZE SCULPTURE THE SOWER, BARBEDIENNE FOUNDRY - A male nude bronze sculpture titled The Sower, signed at the front by Georges Bareau, French (1866-1931). Around half of the natural size. The sculpture has a Barbedienne foundry mark on the back of the base. An early 20th-century piece with a rich sense of movement and accurate anatomical details. The artistic quality of the sculpture anticipates later modernist designs, being a good example of transitional artworks between the Art Nouveau and the avant-garde revolution of the French art scene by the turn of the century. Deep dark patina, original from the manufacturer. Georges Bareau was among the most celebrated artists of his time. In 1893, he won a third medal at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français and then, the following year, a vermeil medal at the Exposition Universelle De Lyon. He was awarded the Salon prize in 1895. A gold medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris crowned his career. He was promoted to the rank of officer of the Legion of Honour in December 1906.
