THE WANDERER, A SIGNED BRONZE BY EMILE HEBERT CA 1880S - A 1880s French patinated bronze sculpture signed by Pierre-Eugene Emile Hebert (French, 1823 – 1893). The medium-sized piece is also known by the title Le Vagabond. Imagined and executed with a great sense of movement, the figure develops in a triple parallel diagonal axis intentionally broken through the perpendicular direction of the human face as well as its different body parts. The overall artistic results give a baroque feeling to the sculpture while incorporating many modern compositional elements that allow ”The Wanderer” to dialogue with the observer directly. The dynamics on display in this artwork might trick the spectator's perception of its meanings. Where is Le Vagabond looking? Is he indifferent to his own world? Is he a homeless person or a genuine philosopher? Hebert achieves on this piece an interactive effect between artwork and public that is rarely noted in pieces of his time. Emile Hebert was trained by his father. Well-respected in official circles by the mid-1850s, Hebert was chosen, along with his father, to represent France in the Fine-Arts section of the 1855 Paris Universal Exposition.
