MAX LE VERRIER (FRENCH, 1891–1973) ”SINGE À LA LANTERN” (”MONKEY WITH LANTERN”), CIRCA 1930 - A stylized Art Deco figure of a crouching monkey holding a small lantern suspended from its raised arm. The sculpture exhibits Le Verrier’s characteristic combination of humor, elegance, and modernist geometry, enhanced by a fine green patina and mounted on a polished black marble plinth. The composition embodies the spirit of the 1930s, when Le Verrier’s playful yet refined designs became icons of Parisian decorative arts. Footnotes: Max Le Verrier was among the foremost sculptors of the Art Deco movement, renowned for his decorative bronzes and lamps inspired by the human and animal form. Trained under Jean Boucher and active in Montparnasse, Le Verrier produced numerous sculptural editions in patinated metal, often with a witty or symbolic character. Variants of this model, Singe à la lanterne, were sold both as decorative statuettes and as functional lamp bases in Paris during the interwar period. Please make all inquiries before bidding. Small areas of rubbing and patina variation. The marble base with minor edge nicks and light surface veins typical of the material. Lantern element intact and freely suspended.
