A SIGNED VASCO PEREIRA DA CONCEIÇÃO (1914-1992) ABSTRACT SCULPTURE, 1966, PORTUGAL - A fine abstract sculpture by the Portuguese artist Vasco Pereira da Conceição (1914-1992), one of the most prolific and well-known of the Portuguese sculptors of the 20th century. This piece appears to be an example from his series entitled ”Human Suggestion”. The piece is signed to the base with the initials 'V.P.C.' and dated '1966'. Exhibiting his first sculpture in 1930, da Conceição showed himself to be a talented artist already at the young age of 16. He would go on to attend the School of Fine Arts at Porto, then the School of Fine arts at Lisbon, collaborating with Leopoldo de Almeida and Canto da Maia in the Exhibition of the Portuguese World in 1940. He went on to have a long and successful career in the arts, exhibiting and receiving awards at many prestigious events, including II Biennial of São Paulo in 1953, the Brussels International Exhibition in 1958, and the first and second Exhibitions of Plastic Arts of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 1957 and 1961 respectively, among many other occasions over the years.
