AN ITALIAN SCULPTOR, PROBABLY 16TH–17TH CENTURY, HEAD OF EMPEROR MARCUS AURELIUS - A finely modeled terracotta head depicting the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, shown with a full beard, curling hair, and contemplative expression. The work reflects the Renaissance revival of classical portraiture, combining idealized features with an acute sense of psychological presence. The naturalistic treatment of the hair and beard, rendered in vigorous incised locks, evokes antique prototypes while embodying the humanistic spirit of the Italian Cinquecento. Such terracotta heads, often created as independent studies or as preparatory models for marble or bronze busts, were prized in artists’ studios and noble collections alike.
