AN ALEXANDER ARCHIPENKO (1887-1964) 'WALKING WOMAN' TERRACOTTA SCULPTURE, C. 1937 - A sculpture entitled 'Walking Woman' by the Ukrainian born artist Alexander Archipenko (1887-1964). The piece is comprised of terracotta sculpted in a such a way as to be suggestive of both a walking woman, and a woman's genitalia, while retaining a form generally abstract from both. Signed by the artist on the underside. Archipenko was born in Ukraine in 1887, then part of the Russian Empire. He studied art at the Kyiv Art School from 1902-1905 before finishing his schooling and beginning to study under Serhiy Svetoslavsky and soon after showing in his first exhibition alongside Alexander Bogomazov. His artworks were some of the earliest examples of Cubism, with his cubist sculptures being the first to be shown after those by Picasso himself. He eventually emigrated to the United States in 1923 where he gained considerable fame and influenced the abstract and cubist movements greatly. He passed in 1964 in New York City, where he had lived since arriving in America. Please make all inquiries before bidding. All lots are sold ”as-is”, refer to our T&C.
