A SEVRES COBALT PORCELAIN AND ORMOLU CLOCK SET, FRANCE, CA 1850'S - Sevres France, mantel clock set in high Gothic revival style, antique mid of the 19th century garniture. A central clock with an upper reliquary box, a pair of matching chalices with lids. The set is manufactured with very fine gilt ormolu and cobalt blue porcelain medallions. Each medallion is painted with a miniature portrait of members of the nobility as well as heraldry crests and other symbols. The clock dial has Roman numerals in Gothic blackletter typography style. The central piece has dragons as feet. This Sevres set is a great example of the eclecticism of the Romantic period in Continental Europe. The decorative elements are a fictional idealization of the late medieval era, a moment in which France and other Western countries were achieving their unified political structures under the concept of National States. The set is designed in an almost magnificent architectural conception, a celebration of the French cultural heritage and cultural achievements. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
