A G. BORTOLOTTI LARGE CARVED PINEWOOD FRAME, SIGNED AND DATED 1860 - An exceptionally elaborate carved cirmolo (pine) frame, signed and dated “G. Bortolotti / 1860”, richly ornamented with scrolling acanthus foliage, floral motifs, and full-round putti representing the Four Seasons. Each cherub is rendered with individualized expression and gesture one reading, another sleeping, a third holding a cluster of fruit, and a fourth playing a musical instrument—creating a lively allegorical cycle of the arts and nature. The deep relief carving, pierced background, and rhythmic swirl of leaves exemplify the Romantic-Baroque revival aesthetic flourishing in Lombardy during the mid-19th century. The Bortolotti family workshop, active in Milan in the second half of the 19th century, was renowned for virtuoso cabinetmaking and ornamental woodcarving exhibited at Italian national expositions. This frame, conceived as an independent artwork, illustrates the transition from classical symmetry toward exuberant, sculptural ornamentation inspired by late-Renaissance prototypes. Condition: Excellent overall condition with minor age-related surface wear and tiny losses to leaf tips. Old, stable joins; traces of original reddish-brown patina enhanced by later wax. No structural damage. Ready for glazing or mirror mounting.
