A BENGAL SCHOOL INK ON PAPER DRAWING AFTER NANDALAL BOSE - The drawing depicts a head of a young women copied from a fresco in one of the Buddhist caves at Bagh in the Amjhera District of Gwalior State, Central India. The original fresco was painted in the 6th and 7th century AD. Signed lower right. Note: Nandalal Bose (1883-1966) was an influential figure of the Bengal School of Art. He was an immediate disciple of Abanindranath Tagore, the leading artist and exponent of the school, as well as the reformist art teacher Dr E. B. Havell. Adhering to his mentor's patriotic commitment, Nandalal retrieved themes from the Indian epic past or scenes from romantic tales and reworked them in a highly romanticised style. Provenance: according to the late collector and owner's son, the artwork is a part of the owner's late father's inheritance (Mirza Sami Baig Born, born: July 1, 1949, Hyd, India, passed away in India in 2013), which includes over 2500 artworks from India. The artworks were purchased directly from the artist in India, while Mirza Sami Baig Born made multiple trips to visit the country. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
