A MUGHAL OR COMPANY SCHOOL, NORTHERN INDIA, C. LATE 18TH CENTURY, STUDY OF A SACRED IBIS - Mughal or Company School (Northern India, c. late 18th–early 19th century), study of a sacred ibis. Opaque watercolor and ink on wasli paper. Calligraphic panel in Persian above; circular seal or signature lower right. A finely detailed naturalistic rendering of a sacred ibis, likely intended as part of an imperial or nobleman's illustrated bestiary or album (muraqqa). The bird is shown in profile, its plumage highlighted with delicate brushwork in white, blue, and grey, against a plain buff ground. The elegant calligraphy above, written in Persian, likely provides a poetic or descriptive text referencing the ibis's attributes, habitat, or symbolic meaning. This work follows the Mughal and later Company School tradition, which combined Indian miniature technique with European scientific illustration under British patronage. The top panel is composed of multiple Persian verses, which may include poetry, zoological observations, or moral allusions.
