A MUGHAL OR COMPANY SCHOOL, INDIA, LATE 18TH CENTURY. STUDY OF AN INDIAN GREY HORNBILL (OCYCEROS BIROSTRIS) - Mughal or Company School, India, late 18th century. Study of an Indian Grey Hornbill (Ocyceros birostris). Opaque watercolor and ink on wasli paper. Inscribed with Persian poetic or descriptive verse above; circular seal lower right. This exquisitely detailed image of a hornbill perched on a branch is painted in the refined miniature tradition of Indo-Persian court art. The plumage is delicately shaded in tones of grey, buff, black, and white, while the beak is rendered in striking shades of orange and coral red. The bird’s anklets suggest it may have been a tamed or prized aviary specimen, common among Mughal nobility. The Persian calligraphy panel above likely describes the hornbill in poetic or symbolic terms, as was typical in illustrated muraqqa (albums). Please make all inquiries before bidding.
