A CHARLES CATTERMOLE (1832-1900) ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR FOR SHAKESPEARE 1880 ILLUSTRATED EDITION - An original watercolor by English artist Charles Cattermole, RI, RBA (1832-1900) for the 1880 illustrated edition of Shakespeare's works. This piece depicts Act 3, Scene 3, of 'Much Ado About Nothing' in which Dogberry and Verges command the nightwatchmen to pay special attention to the house of Leonato. Cattermole was a prolific Victorian illustrator well renowned for his depictions of famous literary scenes and historical scenes. He was clearly inspired by, and may have been taught by, his even more famous uncle, George Cattermole, RWS (1800-1868), illustrator of Sir Walter Scott's Waverley Novels, John Britton's various antiquarian works, and some of Dickens' novels, among many other works.
