A TERRACOTTA ORIENTALIST BUST, ”ARAB”, GOLDSCHEIDER MANUFACTORY, VIENNA - Austria, circa 1890–1910. Terracotta with cold-paint, parcel-gilt, and bronze-patinated surface; the square flared socle with an applied pseudo-Arabic cartouche to the front. Well-modeled bust of a bearded North-African/Levantine man in a wrapped headcloth and heavy burnous, the textures of wool, brai, d and tassels crisply picked out; the flesh parts darkly patinated to simulate bronze, the garments in olive and ochre with gilt highlights. The reverse carries the standard rectangular Fr. Goldscheider signature plaque used by the Vienna factory on its terracotta and composition busts of the period, and the impressed two-line legal reservation mark. The subject belongs to Goldscheider’s popular late-19th-century Orientalist series produced for the international market. Signed to the reverse with the facsimile cartouche ”Fr. Goldscheider” and impressed legal stamp ”GESCHÜTZT / REPRODUKTION VORBEHALTEN” (Protected / Reproduction Reserved). Please make all inquiries before bidding.
