A DECORATIVE INDIAN SILVER PALANQUIN-FORM CASKET WITH A PAIR OF DEER-SHAPED BOXES, 19TH CENTURY - The rectangular casket modeled as a ceremonial palanquin (howdah), finely worked in openwork silver filigree with foliate panels and a domed cover surmounted by three figural finials. The piece is mounted with twisted side poles and stands on four stylized feet. Accompanied by a pair of small lidded boxes, each in the form of a recumbent deer on a floral cushion, the covers lifting to reveal gilt-washed interiors. The form of a miniature palanquin (carried carriage) suggests symbolic use, perhaps as a decorative betel nut box, incense container, or presentation piece. The recumbent deer boxes are finely chased and may have served as spice or trinket containers, often given as part of Indian wedding or festive dowry traditions. The combination of filigree, gilt interior, and animal-form boxes is characteristic of Indian silversmithing from regions such as Cutch (Kutch), Lucknow, or Hyderabad during the late 19th to early 20th century.
