A TOBA BATAK CARVED MEDICINE HORN, NORTHERN SUMATRA, INDONESIA, LATE 19TH CENTURY - A finely carved horn morsarang or medicine created by the Toba Batak people of northern Sumatra. The vessel is carved in the characteristic elongated and curving form that echoes a water buffalo horn. The entire surface is richly decorated with incised geometric patterns and figural motifs that reflect traditional Batak symbolism. The front of the vessel displays a powerful singa guardian figure with large, rounded eyes and elaborate engraved ornamentation. The back features a row of four seated ancestor figures connected by articulated arms, representing protective lineage spirits. Additional carved human figures appear along the length of the horn. The carved stopper at the tip is shaped as a standing figure with stylized features and traditional coiffure. Medicine horns of this type were used by Batak ritual specialists known as datu. They contained magical substances and were believed to hold protective and curative powers. This example shows warm patina, good age, and intricate workmanship throughout.
