A TOBA BATAK CARVED MEDICINE HORN, NORTHERN SUMATRA, INDONESIA, LATE 19TH CENTURY - A finely carved wooden morsarang medicine horn created by the Toba Batak people of northern Sumatra. The long, curving body is decorated with intricate incised ornamentation that reflects traditional Batak aesthetic vocabulary. The lower section features dense geometric and scroll patterns carved in low relief, while the upper register displays a sequence of stylized human ancestor figures in seated posture. The terminal end of the horn is carved as an expressive protective spirit. The elongated head is adorned with a long tapering horn and a hooked beard, both characteristic of guardian imagery used by Batak ritual specialists. Three ancestor figures rise behind the guardian, each carved with angular features and upright stance. The opposite end is fitted with a carved stopper in the form of a seated figure with pronounced head and folded limbs. Medicine horns such as this were used by Batak ritual priests known as datu to store magical materials used in protection and healing. This example shows particularly well-executed carving, balanced proportions, and an appealing, warm patina that indicates age and use. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
