A CARVED MEERSCHAUM HUNTING SCENE TOBACCO PIPE - The large meerschaum bowl finely carved in high relief with a detailed hunting scene depicting a hunter with rifle and hunting knife beside a fallen stag attacked by a hound. The hunter, wearing a hat and knee-length boots, stands beneath a naturalistic tree form that curves into the pipe’s upper rim. The intricate modeling captures both motion and texture the hound’s fur, the stag’s antlers, and the hunter’s clothing are all executed with exceptional detail. The pipe retains its original long amber-colored stem, likely of amber or amberine composite. Provenance: Private collection, United States. This elaborately carved type of meerschaum pipe, celebrating hunting motifs, was especially popular among Central European gentlemen during the second half of the 19th century. Comparable examples were produced in Vienna and Budapest workshops, often mounted with silver fittings or preserved in fitted cases. Dimensions: L: 12 1/2 in., (31 cm.)
