A SCARCE PERSIAN STEEL PEN HOLDER WITH GOLD INLAY, 18TH CEN. - Of elongated rounded rectangular form, the hinged lid opening to reveal a compartment for reed pens. The surface finely decorated with delicate gold-inlaid calligraphy and floral scrollwork on a darkened steel ground, much of the decoration now worn with age but still retaining areas of original brilliance. The inlay includes bands of Persian inscriptions in nastaʿlīq script, invoking blessings and possibly poetic verses, alongside stylized arabesques. These pen holders (qalamdan) were essential accessories for scholars, poets, and administrators of the Persian courts, combining utility with refinement. The present example illustrates the high level of technical skill in metalwork during the Safavid and early Qajar period. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
