A CHINESE CARVED MOTHER-OF-PEARL SHELL FAN-SHAPED PLAQUE - Of fan-shaped form, intricately carved in low relief on the nacreous surface with a continuous garden scene. The composition depicts elegant figures in flowing robes engaged in conversation beneath a pine tree and beside a walled pavilion with tiled roofs and lattice windows. Rockwork, flowering plants, and a banana tree fill the background, the scene finely detailed to capture depth and architectural perspective. The reverse is undecorated, revealing the natural iridescence of the shell. Qing Dynasty, 19th century. Provenance: Private collection, United States. This type of mother-of-pearl carving was popular during the late Qing dynasty, often made in Guangzhou (Canton) or Fujian for the export market.
