Bidspirit auction | AN OIL ON CANVAS PORTRAIT
AN OIL ON CANVAS PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG MAN, EARLY 20TH CENTURY - A refined half-length portrait depicting a young man shown three-quarter view against a dark, neutral background. The sitter is portrayed with arms crossed, wearing a dark suit, white shirt, and tie, conveying a composed and confident demeanor. The face is sensitively modeled with careful attention to tonal transitions and restrained highlights, characteristic of academic portrait painting of the Edwardian to early interwar period. The overall style reflects early 20th-century academic realism, with subdued coloration, controlled brushwork, and emphasis on likeness rather than overt symbolism. While the assured pose and presentation may suggest a sitter of social or professional standing, possibly connected to the arts or theater, no inscription, signature, or documentary evidence survives to confirm the identity of the subject. The painting is housed in a gilt wooden frame of appropriate period character. The reverse shows a later stretcher and hanging hardware, consistent with subsequent reframing. Unidentified artist, oil on canvas. Please make all inquiries before bidding. All lots are sold ”as-is”, refer to our T&C. Helios Auctions offers in-house shipping. Surface examination shows light age-related wear and minor abrasions, consistent with age. The frame shows minor handling wear and patina.
