CLIFFORD BRITISH SCHOOL LATE 19TH–EARLY 20TH CENTURY - A pair of horizontal-format watercolors on paper depicting tranquil rural riverside scenes at sunset with thatched cottages and village buildings arranged along the water’s edge small boats drawn up on the river and figures engaged in quiet daily activity The low sun is rendered in warm amber and rose tones reflected across the rippling surface of the water creating a strong atmospheric effect characteristic of late Victorian and Edwardian picturesque landscape imagery The handling is delicate and tonal with soft transitions in sky and water and more detailed treatment in the cottages and foliage Each work bears a title plaque affixed to the frame reading ‘SUNSET GLOW, J. CLIFFORD’ One example shows a faint signature visible at the lower edge beneath the mount Both are housed in matching black-painted molded frames with gilt title plaques indicating they were conceived and retailed as a decorative pair.
