A PAINTING ON SILK DEPICTING THE OPÉRA GARNIER, PARIS, SIGNED ”P. RENAIG,” FRENCH SCHOOL, MID-20TH CENTURY - Painting on silk depicting a lively Parisian street scene before the Opéra Garnier, with the monumental façade rendered in a loose, impressionistic manner. Pedestrians in mid-century attire animate the foreground, interspersed with automobiles and café-lined streets, evoking the bustle of postwar Paris. The composition is executed with confident, gestural brushwork and a bright, decorative palette, using opaque and semi-opaque pigments applied directly to silk, allowing the natural texture of the support to subtly inform the surface. Architectural details are suggested rather than fully delineated, while figures are rendered with expressive economy, emphasizing movement and atmosphere over strict realism. Signed to the lower right “P. Renaig.” The work aligns with decorative French city views produced for the tourist and gallery market in the mid-20th century, inspired by Parisian landmarks and urban life. Housed in a gilt wood frame with a wide mat and glazed. The reverse is fitted with a period paper backing and hanging wire, consistent with commercial framing of the period. The painted silk shows light, even toning consistent with age and exposure. Minor scattered surface abrasions and small areas of pigment loss, primarily in the darker passages and along the lower portion, visible under close inspection. No major tears or structural damage to the silk observed. The mat exhibits noticeable foxing, staining, and discoloration, particularly along the left and lower edges. The frame shows moderate wear with rubbing to the gilt finish and small nicks at the corners. The backing paper is intact but aged and discolored. The work remains stable and visually attractive.
