Bidspirit auction | AN OIL ON BOARD SNOWY
AN OIL ON BOARD SNOWY LANDSCAPE, SIGNED E. CORNWELL, POSSIBLY AMERICAN SCHOOL, LATE 19TH TO EARLY 20TH CENTURY - Oil on board depicting a quiet winter landscape centered on a snow-covered rural settlement with a small church or chapel crowned by a steep tower roof rising above clustered buildings. A narrow arched bridge spans a frozen or slow-moving stream in the foreground, flanked by snow-laden banks and sparse winter vegetation. The composition is rendered in a restrained palette of cool grays, muted browns, and soft whites, with delicate textural brushwork suggesting falling snow and atmospheric haze. The handling emphasizes mood and season rather than topographical precision, consistent with late 19th or early 20th-century American or Anglo-European landscape traditions. Signed at the lower right E. Cornwell. The painting is housed in an ornate period gilt wood frame with molded and floral carved decoration, likely original to the work. The painted surface shows light, age-appropriate craquelure and minor abrasions, particularly in darker passages, with scattered small losses or thin areas consistent with age. No major restorations are apparent under normal light. The varnish appears slightly dulled with mild surface grime. The frame shows wear to the gilding, with scattered losses, rubbing, and minor separations at the corners. Overall the work presents well and is in good, honest condition for its age. Some small spots of loss to the frame.
