Bidspirit auction | AN OIL ON CANVAS PORTRAIT

AN OIL ON CANVAS PORTRAIT AFTER REMBRANDT’S ”TRONIE”, EUROPEAN SCHOOL, 19TH CENTURY - Oil on canvas depicting a bust-length male figure in a dark hat and cloak, directly inspired by Rembrandt’s tronie-type character studies of the 1630s and 1640s. The sitter is shown half-length against a deep shadowed ground, with softly modeled facial features, warm flesh tones, and expressive eyes emerging from the surrounding darkness. The handling emphasizes chiaroscuro, with light concentrated on the face and collar and dissolving into rich browns and blacks in the costume and background, deliberately echoing Rembrandt’s painterly language rather than functioning as a literal copy. The work is presented as a historicizing homage, likely intended as a decorative or academic interpretation rather than an attempt at period deception. Unsigned. Housed in a substantial carved and gilt wood frame of traditional Old Master style, with leaf-and-scroll ornament. Please make all inquiries before bidding. All lots are sold ”as-is”, refer to our T&C. Helios Auctions offers in-house shipping. In case we can not accommodate a shipping request, a list of additional shippers will be provided. Dimensions: 34 1/2 x 23 1/4 in., (87.6 x 59.1 cm.) Condition: The canvas is stable and well-stretched. Minor scattered surface abrasions and a small area of paint loss are visible in the dark background, with light surface wear consistent with age and handling. No obvious major restorations were observed under normal light. Frame with general wear, minor nicks, and surface rubbing.
