A WATERCOLOR PORTRAIT OF A NUDE WOMAN, FRENCH SCHOOL, LATE 19TH / EARLY 20TH CENTURY - A finely executed watercolor on paper depicting a partially draped nude woman shown in a wooded outdoor setting. The figure is presented in a classical contrapposto pose with one arm raised to the head and the other drawn inward, creating a sense of modesty and introspection. The artist demonstrates refined academic draftsmanship, particularly in the modeling of flesh tones and the subtle modulation of light across the torso achieved through transparent washes. The palette is restrained and harmonious with warm flesh tones set against deep greens and muted earth colors of the landscape, accented by pale blue drapery. The composition and handling are characteristic of late 19th to early 20th century French academic figure studies, drawing upon classical and Salon traditions. The watercolor is housed in an ornate gilt wood frame with molded and foliate carved decoration and a green mat which complements the tonal range of the work. Dimensions: 21 1/2 x 13 1/2 in., (54.6 x 34.3 cm.) Condition: The watercolor appears in good overall condition with light, even toning to the paper consistent with age. Minor surface handling marks are visible under close inspection. The frame shows wear to the gilding with scattered losses and abrasions, particularly along the edges and corners. The backing board is later with small areas of loss and tape residue.
