Bidspirit auction | AN OIL ON CANVAS STILL
AN OIL ON CANVAS STILL LIFE, SIGNED M. JACOBS, EUROPEAN SCHOOL, LATE 19TH / EARLY 20TH CENTURY - Oil on canvas depicting a carefully arranged still life composed of a dead game bird laid on a tabletop alongside fruit a ceramic jug a glass decanter and a slice of cheese presented on a plate. The composition reflects a traditional continental still life vocabulary combining elements of vanitas and domestic abundance. The artist demonstrates solid academic training in the rendering of textures particularly in the plumage of the bird the reflective surfaces of the glass and glazed pottery and the contrasting matte flesh of the fruit. The palette is warm and restrained, dominated by browns, ochres and muted blues set against a dark atmospheric ground, enhancing depth and chiaroscuro. Signed to the lower right, M. Jacobs. The canvas is housed in a period gilt wood frame with molded and scrolling decoration. The reverse reveals an original wooden stretcher and old canvas consistent with late 19th to early 20th century European manufacture, with later hanging wire.
