AN ENGRAVING DEPICTING THE PLAGUE OF LOCUSTS IN EGYPT, AFTER JOHANNES LUGTENBURG, EUROPEAN, 18TH CENTURY - A finely detailed copper engraving illustrating the biblical scene of the Plague of Locusts in Egypt from the Book of Exodus. The dramatic composition shows swarming locusts descending upon a populated landscape with crowds of figures in agitation and despair, while architectural elements and distant city structures anchor the narrative setting. The engraving is rich in linear detail with dense cross-hatching and careful modulation of light and shadow typical of 18th-century biblical printmaking. The margin bears inscriptions in multiple languages, including German and French, with references to Exodus X v.13 and the plate number 18 indicating the print’s inclusion within a larger illustrated biblical series. The print is after Johannes Lugtenburg and was published by J. Covens et C. Mortier in Amsterdam. The engraving is presented in a period-style gilt wood frame with a multi-layered mat incorporating gilt rule decoration. Condition: The engraving shows light overall toning and scattered foxing consistent with age. A central vertical and horizontal fold crease is visible from the original publication. The mat exhibits discoloration and minor staining. The frame shows wear with losses to the gilding and abrasions along edges and corners.
