Bidspirit auction | A WATERCOLOR AND INK DRAWING

A WATERCOLOR AND INK DRAWING OF DON QUIXOTE AND SANCHO PANZA, SIGNED AND DATED 1963 - Watercolor and ink on paper depicting the iconic literary figures Don Quixote and Sancho Panza mounted on horseback, rendered in a highly expressive linear style. The composition is dominated by energetic looping ink lines and loose washes of warm earth tones with Don Quixote shown tall and elongated holding a lance while Sancho Panza appears compact and grounded beside him. The drawing emphasizes movement character and psychological contrast rather than anatomical precision reflecting a mid-20th-century modernist approach to literary illustration. Signed and dated 63 at the lower left with the artist’s name partially legible. The work is presented in a period frame with gilt inner molding and a wide terracotta-colored mat. The reverse retains the original cardboard backing with an old wire hanger consistent with mid-century framing practices. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
