Bidspirit auction | A SAMUEL ARLENT EDWARDS (1862-1938)
A SAMUEL ARLENT EDWARDS (1862-1938) MEZZOTINT PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN - A beautiful mezzotint portrait of a woman created by English-American artist Samuel Arlent Edwards (1862-1938). Edwards had resurrected the art of mezzotint printing from a single plate, an art lost for over 100 years. He used this process to do extremely limited runs of color mezzotints such as this one, requiring that they all be sold framed, and subsequently destroying the original printing plate to ensure that no more copies could ever be made. He was well renowned for his skill in engraving and his delicate color-work which evoked the artistry of the old English masters of the craft. America, late 19th or early 20th century.
