Bidspirit auction | A PAINTED SERVING TRAY, NORTHERN

A PAINTED SERVING TRAY, NORTHERN EUROPEAN SCHOOL, LATE 19TH TO EARLY 20TH CENTURY - Painted metal serving tray of rectangular form with rounded corners, decorated to the center with a winter landscape scene depicting figures on a frozen waterway beneath a dramatic cloud filled sky, with windmills and buildings in the background. The composition is executed in a dark tonal palette of blues greys and browns, evoking Dutch and Northern European winter genre painting traditions of the 17th century as interpreted in later decorative arts. The scene is bordered by a black ground with stenciled gilt floral decoration along the rim, consistent with late 19th to early 20th century decorative serving trays produced for domestic use. The tray combines utilitarian function with pictorial decoration and reflects the continued popularity of historic winter landscape imagery in European decorative objects of the period.
