AN HAND COLORED ENGRAVING DEPICTING THE PAPAL PALACE AND GARDENS, ITALIAN SCHOOL, 18TH CENTURY - Hand colored engraving depicting a formal view of the Papal Palace and its terraced gardens rendered in strict linear perspective with symmetrical parterres fountains avenues of trees and architectural elements extending into the distance. The composition reflects the grand manner of late 18th century Italian topographical and architectural printmaking intended to document and celebrate monumental ecclesiastical and civic sites. Figures in period dress animate the foreground terraces providing scale and narrative interest. The print is finely engraved and delicately hand colored with restrained greens blues and ochres typical of the period. The image is titled within the plate in French identifying the Papal Palace and its gardens. Presented in a later but appropriate molded and ebonized frame with gilt inner border. The engraving shows light age toning and minor foxing consistent with age. Colors remain clear and evenly applied. Margins appear trimmed to the plate mark. The frame shows light wear and surface abrasions consistent with age and handling.
