Bidspirit auction | A WATERCOLOR LANDSCAPE, POSSIBLY AMERICAN

A WATERCOLOR LANDSCAPE, POSSIBLY AMERICAN SCHOOL, MID 20TH CENTURY - Watercolor on paper depicting an expansive autumnal landscape with a winding path in the foreground leading through a stand of leafless trees toward a distant body of water and rolling hills beneath a cloud filled sky. The composition emphasizes depth and atmospheric perspective with layered washes of warm browns rusts and ochres contrasted by cool blues and greys in the sky and distant horizon. The handling is confident and fluid with visible brushwork and controlled use of transparency characteristic of mid 20th century American landscape watercolor. Signed to the lower left ”Watson, ” though the artist has not been conclusively identified. The work is presented in a simple wood frame with a wide mat, likely later but appropriate for the period.
