Bidspirit auction | A GIOVANNI SALVIATI (1881-1950) WATERCOLOR
A GIOVANNI SALVIATI (1881-1950) WATERCOLOR VENETIAN CANAL SCENE - Watercolor on fine-wove watercolor paper depicting a panoramic view of the Grand Canal in Venice animated by gondolas sailing craft and distant figures, with the domes and campanile of Santa Maria della Salute rising prominently in the background. The composition is balanced and expansive, with careful recession into depth and a luminous handling of atmosphere characteristic of Venetian vedute painting of the early twentieth century. The artist employs a refined palette of pale blues, warm ochres, and soft terra-cotta tones, using confident and fluid brushwork to articulate architectural facades, shimmering water reflections, and a gently clouded sky. The surface retains visible paper texture consistent with high-quality artist paper rather than board or silk. Signed at the lower edge ”B. Salviati” in brown ink. The work reflects Salviati’s academic grounding, combined with a commercial sensitivity appealing to Grand Tour and American collectors of the interwar period. The watercolor is housed in its original or early frame with a wide mat and period glass. The verso construction and backing are consistent with mid-twentieth-century American gallery presentation.
