A FRENCH PÂTE-SUR-PÂTE PORCELAIN PORTRAIT PLATE, ATTRIBUTED TO SÈVRES, LATE 19TH CENTURY - A finely decorated French porcelain plate in the pâte-sur-pâte technique, the center featuring a raised white classical male profilean elderly bearded figure in a hooded mantle modeled in relief against a mottled terracotta-red ground. The portrait medallion is framed by a gilt border resembling a laurel wreath. The cavetto and rim are decorated with a dense ”vermiculé” (worm-track) pattern in deep slate-blue and black, highlighted with stylized branches and berries in raised enamel, and finished with gilt edges. The artistic combination of pâte-sur-pâte portraiture with an Art Nouveau–influenced botanical border is characteristic of French luxury porcelain of the Sèvres school, ca. 1880–1900.
