A PAIR OF JAPANESE KUTANI MORIAGE PORCELAIN VASES WITH FIGURAL DECORATION, MEIJI PERIOD, LATE 19TH TO EARLY 20TH CENTURY - Of baluster form with everted rims, each finely painted and richly enameled in iron red, turquoise, green, aubergine, and gilt on a chocolate-brown ground, decorated with animated figural scenes drawn from folklore, including humorous and expressive male and female characters in patterned robes. The decoration is executed in raised enamel moriage technique with extensive gold highlights and intricate textile patterning, the necks and shoulders further enriched with geometric and foliate borders. The bases unmarked, as typical of export wares of this type, the porcelain bodies fired to a light tone beneath the enamels. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
